Free maths olympiad practice
Choose Spark (Grades 7–8), Stretch (Grades 9–10) or Summit (Grades 11–12). Fifteen original questions include optional hints, worked solutions and browser-local progress. No account is needed.
For example, joining a square’s side midpoints creates a square with half the original area. If x + y = 9 and xy = 14, then x² + y² = 9² − 2(14) = 53.
Why maths olympiads matter for your child
Non-routine problems give learners opportunities to practise flexible thinking, logical reasoning, persistence and explaining why an answer works. Parents can ask, “What do you notice?” or “Can you try a smaller case?” Progress depends on the learner, practice and support.
Maths olympiad questions from parents
What is a maths olympiad?
A maths olympiad is a competition built around non-routine mathematical problems. Learners use reasoning, patterns and creative strategies to tackle questions that often look different from routine classroom exercises.
Does my child need to be a maths “genius”?
No. Curiosity and a willingness to try are useful starting points. Choose an appropriate difficulty, allow time to think and use hints when needed. Competition entry requirements vary, so discuss the right option with your child’s school or our team.
Which competition is right for my child’s grade?
The South African Mathematics Challenge is for Grades 4–7; the South African Mathematics Olympiad is for Grades 8–12. Our practice lab covers Grades 7–12 with suggested difficulty levels. Check current entry details directly with SAMF or your school.
Is the practice challenge really free?
Yes. All 15 practice questions, hints and worked solutions on this page are free. There is no account or payment required. Beyond Education’s tutoring and training are separate services; contact us for current options and pricing.
How can I help when my child gets stuck?
Ask what they notice, whether they can draw a picture, or what happens in a smaller example. Give them time before offering a hint. Afterwards, invite them to explain the solution in their own words. Focus on the strategy and effort as well as the answer.
Is progress saved? Do you collect learner details?
This practice lab asks for no learner details. It saves the selected level, answers and progress in this browser’s local storage when available. Nothing from the practice session is sent to Beyond. Use “Start over” to clear a level’s progress. Shared devices share this saved progress.
Can we prepare online or in Midrand?
